Poblenou preserves one of Barcelona's most distinctive mixes: former industrial buildings, housing blocks, creative studios and a neighbourhood life that stretches all the way to the sea. It has neither the density of the historic centre nor the grandeur of the Eixample; here, the best plan is usually an unhurried walk along Rambla del Poblenou and the streets leading down to the beach.

For more than a century it was one of the city's main industrial landscapes, known as the Catalan Manchester. Many chimneys, warehouses and factories have changed use, and the 22@ area has brought new offices and facilities. Even so, the neighbourhood still has corners where that industrial memory is very visible, especially around Pere IV and its repurposed factories.

Start on Rambla del Poblenou, head down to the sea and continue along the promenade to Nova Icaria beach. It is a good alternative to Barceloneta if you are looking for a quieter, more local feel, with terraces, ice-cream shops, bars and the Mediterranean just minutes away. To understand the contrast within the neighbourhood, combine the older streets with the Glòries and Diagonal Mar areas.
