When to visit Barcelona: the best time depends on what you're after
There's no single best time to visit Barcelona: it depends on whether you care about the beach, the price, fewer crowds, or one of its big festivals.

There's no single best time to visit Barcelona. It depends on whether you're after the beach, low prices, a quieter city, or timing your trip around one of its big festivals. Here's what to expect month by month.
Summer (June to August): beach and crowds
It's high season for a reason: it's hot, the sea is at its best, and the days are long. It's also when the city is at its most crowded, with flight and hotel prices at their peak and longer queues at the Sagrada Família or Park Güell. July and August are humid on top of hot, so the middle of the day can feel heavy for walking around the old town.
Spring (April and May): the best weather of the year
Mild temperatures, little rain, and none of summer's crowds yet. April 23 is Sant Jordi, the festival of books and roses: the whole city fills with street stalls, and it's a good date to visit if you enjoy a festive atmosphere without August's heat. May is probably the month with the best balance between weather and calm.
Autumn (September and October): summer without the crowds
The sea is still warm in September, and temperatures drop to a much more comfortable level for walking. La Mercè, the city's biggest festival, takes place in late September with human towers, fire runs, and free concerts across the centre. October turns cooler, but it's still a quiet time with good prices.
Winter (November to March): low prices, no beach
The cheapest months of the year to fly in and sleep in Barcelona, when the city feels far more like a place people actually live than a tourist stop. There's no beach, but there are no queues either: a good time for museums, for Modernisme, and for December's Christmas markets, like the one by the Cathedral. January and February are the quietest months of the whole year.

Outside high season (June to August) and outside long weekends or Easter week. January, February and the second half of November usually have the cheapest flights and hotels of the year.
