The Arc de Triomf, designed by architect Josep Vilaseca, was built in 1888 as a monumental entrance gate to that year's Universal Exhibition, held in the neighbouring Parc de la Ciutadella.
It's built in exposed reddish brick, an unusual material for a monument of this kind, decorated with allegorical reliefs depicting Barcelona welcoming exhibition visitors and celebrating its awards and recognitions.
The wide tree-lined promenade running beneath the arch, Passeig de Lluís Companys, is now a favourite spot for locals and tourists to stroll, skate or simply sit, and connects directly to the northern entrance of Parc de la Ciutadella.
