Gaudí didn't build it from scratch: he remodelled it on commission from textile businessman Josep Batlló between 1904 and 1906, transforming a conventional building into a wavy façade covered in fragments of ceramic and glass that change tone with the light.
The most common reading is that it represents the legend of Sant Jordi: the roof, with its curved scales, would be the dragon's back, and the tower with the four-armed cross, the saint's lance driven into its spine. Inside, the central staircase and the light well — with tiles that go from white to deep blue as you climb, to distribute light evenly — are among the most photographed parts of the interior.
It's one of the most expensive visits in the city; if your budget is tight, you can appreciate much of its value just by looking at the façade from the pavement opposite, next to Casa Amatller.
