At the very top of Montjuïc hill, this 17th-century military castle has been a defensive fortress, a political prison and a barracks throughout its history — a far darker past than its current use as a viewpoint and cultural space would suggest.
From its walls and moats you get some of the best panoramic views of Barcelona: the port, the whole city out to Tibidabo and, on clear days, the open sea. It's one of the least crowded viewpoints in the city despite its views.
The most spectacular way up is the Montjuïc cable car, which departs from the park itself and offers aerial views of the city that are worth the trip on their own, though you can also get there by bus or on foot from the centre of the park.
On Sunday afternoons from 15:00, admission to the castle is free — a good thing to know if you're on a tight budget.
