Joan Miró himself drove the creation of this foundation in 1975 to gather and spread his work, and commissioned the building from his lifelong friend Josep Lluís Sert, one of the great names of Catalan rationalist architecture. The result is a white building bathed in natural light, specifically designed so the work would be seen the way the artist wanted.
The permanent collection covers Miró's entire career, from his early figurative paintings to the language of primary shapes and colours he's known for worldwide, plus sculptures, textiles and a room dedicated to Alexander Calder, a personal friend of the artist.
The building's terraces, with outdoor sculptures and views over Barcelona and the port, are part of the visit in their own right — it's worth taking your time and sitting out there for a while.
