Until the 18th century there was nothing here but sea; the neighbourhood was built on reclaimed land to rehouse fishermen displaced by the expansion of the Ciutadella. That humble origin is still visible in the layout of narrow streets running perpendicular to the sea, very different from the Eixample.
The beach itself became famous after the 1992 Olympics, when Barcelona opened its seafront to the public for the first time in its modern history. Today it's the busiest in the city, with beach bars, impromptu volleyball games and a seafront promenade connecting to the rest of the coastline.
To eat, move away from the first row of tourist-facing restaurants right on the sand and head a couple of streets into the neighbourhood: prices drop and the food is usually better.
