This isn't the museum with the most Picasso masterpieces — for that you'd need Paris or Madrid — but it's the one that best explains how he became who he was. The collection focuses on his formative years in Barcelona, between the ages of 14 and 23, with academic drawings that are strikingly accomplished for a teenager.
The Las Meninas series, forty-four variations Picasso painted in 1957 reinterpreting Velázquez's painting, fills an entire room and is the reason many visitors queue up.
The building itself — five connected Gothic and Renaissance palaces — is worth part of the visit on its own. Book your ticket online, since the door queue, especially on weekends, can be long.
