No photo does it justice. You have to stand beneath the columns of the central nave, look up, and watch the light pour in through the stained glass, changing colour with the time of day: blues and greens in the morning on the Nativity façade, reds and oranges in the afternoon on the Passion façade.
Gaudí had been working on it for more than a decade when he was killed by a tram in 1926, and he knew he wouldn't see it finished — he reportedly said his client was in no hurry, referring to God. More than a hundred years later, it's still under construction, funded almost entirely by visitor admissions.
Buy your ticket online in advance, especially in high season: queues without a prior booking can take over an hour. If you're only doing a free "exterior" visit, go at sunset on the Passion façade side, much less crowded than the Nativity side.
