Santa Maria del Mar is, for many art historians, the purest example of Catalan Gothic architecture preserved in Barcelona: straight lines, a spacious interior, and a notable absence of the heavy ornamentation found in other European Gothic churches.
It was built between 1329 and 1383, a record time for the period, largely funded and raised by the El Born neighbourhood itself, including the bastaixos, the port's load carriers who hauled the stones on their backs from Montjuïc. This story inspired the popular novel "Cathedral of the Sea".
Its bright interior stands out for the large rose window on the main façade and the slender octagonal columns holding up the three naves, with almost nothing to interrupt the view from one end of the church to the other.
