Rodalies de Catalunya runs the commuter trains connecting Barcelona with the rest of the metropolitan area and with day-trip destinations that are very popular among visitors staying more than a couple of days.
The R2 Nord line connects central Barcelona (Sants, Passeig de Gràcia and Clot stations) directly with El Prat airport, making it the cheapest alternative to a taxi or the Aerobús shuttle. The R2 Sud line, meanwhile, gets you to Sitges in a little over 40 minutes, and with one transfer you can also reach Vilanova i la Geltrú.
For Montserrat, the usual combination is the FGC train (R5 line) from Plaça Espanya to Monistrol de Montserrat, followed by the funicular or cable car up to the monastery. Barcelona's main stations (Sants, Passeig de Gràcia, Plaça Catalunya) are also connected to the metro, so transferring is straightforward.
