Check the real distance, not just the map

A hotel that shows up as "5 minutes" from a point of interest on its own website may be calculating in a straight line, not walking distance. Before booking, check the real distance on a map and look out for hills (Gràcia and the area around Montjuïc have noticeable slopes).

Interior vs. exterior room

In central areas like the Barri Gòtic or near La Rambla, an exterior-facing room can mean quite a bit of night-time noise on weekends. If you prioritise rest, specifically ask whether the room faces an interior courtyard rather than the street.

Read recent reviews, not just the score

A rating of 8/10 can hide a temporary issue (nearby construction, a change of management) that only shows up when you read reviews from the last 2-3 months. Pay special attention to repeated comments about noise, cleanliness or staff attitude, rather than the overall average score.

Confirm what the price actually includes

Some budget accommodations add a tourist tax, final cleaning fee or deposit on top of the price shown initially. Check the full breakdown before booking to avoid surprises on arrival.

Proximity to a metro stop

Barcelona has a very efficient metro, so you don't need to be right in the centre: accommodation 5-10 minutes' walk from an L1, L2, L3, L4 or L5 metro stop usually pays off compared to somewhere more expensive but without nearby transport.
