When to Book Accommodation

Accommodation prices in Barcelona vary enormously depending on the date, much more than in other European cities of similar size.

Events that spike prices

Mobile World Congress (late February / early March) fills the city with tech industry professionals, and hotel prices can double or triple on those specific dates, even in areas far from the venue. If your trip has nothing to do with the event, it's worth avoiding those dates or booking well in advance.

Other dates that raise demand: Sant Jordi (23 April), the months of July and August for summer holidays, and La Mercè (late September), the city's main festival.

High season vs. mid season

July and August are the most expensive and crowded months, but not necessarily the best time to visit: it's very hot and the busiest sites are packed. May-June and September-October offer good weather with noticeably lower accommodation prices.

How far ahead to book

As a general rule: 2-3 months ahead for a trip in high season or coinciding with a major event, and 3-4 weeks ahead is enough margin in mid or low season. Booking further ahead almost always gets you a better price and more options, especially for tourist apartments with few units available.

Cancellation policy

When comparing prices, look not only at the final number but at whether the rate allows free cancellation. Paying a few extra euros for a flexible rate is usually worth it if your trip isn't fully locked in yet.
